SSi Mantra. The Indian Robotic System.

When I think of “Indian,” the first thing that comes to mind is an Indian Motorcycle. So I decided to start this post with a Scout Bobber… even though it has absolutely nothing to do with the topic.

Since I started to focus on robotic surgery I’ve been feeling a certain kind of FOMO. Fear Of Missing Out is a term my youngest daughter uses, and one that perfectly captures how fast-moving today’s world is.

This time, the FOMO was justified.

In a field where new platforms, technologies, and competitors are emerging faster than ever, staying up to date is not just a matter of curiosity. I make a real effort to follow everything happening in robotic surgical technology. I’ve tracked the evolution of the da Vinci Surgical System closely, often knowing the details of new generations before they even reached the market. It takes time to develop a surgical robot (and to go thought the certification process, and gather the experimental evidence). The development is usually confidential, although there are always signals.

But this time, the Indians caught me off guard. I knew nothing about the SSI Mantra (even though it is already in the 3rd generation!!!). My apologies to India—I should have been paying closer attention (also to Royal Enflield, which is the real Indian motorcycle…).

Now I’m up to speed—and here it is.

PD. I knew about the Mantra3 because of the publication of the first BABA series.
