TORS for a malignant tumor of the base of the tongue

Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) for the removal of a T2, VPH+ squamous cell carcinoma oropharynx (right base of the tongue). The video shows the standard TORS procedure for the resection of the base of the tongue for malignant disease. In this particular case, with multiple ipsilateral nodes, a functional neck dissection, levels Ib through IV,Continue reading “TORS for a malignant tumor of the base of the tongue”

TORS. Benign tumor of the base of the tongue

Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) for the removal of a benign tumor of the base of the tongue. A voluminous mass on the left base of the tongue with benign clinical and radiological behaviour was enucleated in and excisional biopsy procedure. Pathological report: oncocytoma. Oral diet next day (no nasogastric feeding tube). Uneventful post-op. Video Link

Transoral robotic surgery in children

Video link Last week we performed the first pediatric transoral robotic surgery. A very special young patient with severe sleep apnea underwent conventional adenotonsillectomy but symptoms did persist. Due to patient´s characteristics CPAP was not an option. On drug induced sleep endoscopy a severe colapse produced by enlarged lingual tonsils was observed. Therefore lingual tonsillectomyContinue reading “Transoral robotic surgery in children”

You need to get a mouth-gag to start TORS. How to choose?

You definitely cannot perform TransOral Robotic Surgery (TORS) without a mouth-gag. Unlike in percutaneous robotic surgery where cannulas go through the skin and the surgical field is maintained by the insuflation of CO2, in TORS you need a device that keeps the mouth opened and, most important, that retracts the tissues (particularly the tongue) soContinue reading “You need to get a mouth-gag to start TORS.
