In December 2018, I attended the 3rd Congress of the Asia-Pacific Society of Thyroid Surgery (APTS) in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, as an invited speaker. It was held together with the national meeting of the Taiwan Head&Neck Society (THNS). My lecture was:
“Remote Access Thyroid Surgery: Transferring the Asian Experience to Europe.”
We continue to make progress in remote access thyroid surgery, although at a frustratingly slow pace. Since then, I’ve discussed the underlying reasons at various meetings and have laid foundations for further developments—but much remains to be done.
APTS biannual meeting is not just another surgical congress. It is, in my experience, the most dynamic and inspiring global meeting on thyroid surgery. For any surgeon with a curious and pioneering spirit, it’s a must. It’s also where you’ll find the entire spectrum of innovators—from across the world—pushing boundaries and redefining what’s possible.

This performing art combines hand puppets, music, storytelling, and martial arts. It is a very popular form of traditional entertainment in Taiwan and has a rich history dating back to the 17th century, although it reached its peak in the 20th century with the rise of television.
In its most traditional form, puppeteers manipulate intricately crafted hand puppets on small stages, while an epic narrative—accompanied by live music—tells stories of heroes, demons, and Chinese mythology.
