Johnson & Johnson has reached a major milestone: the U.S. FDA has granted market authorization for the OTTAVA™ Robotic Surgery System, clearing the company’s entry into the competitive soft-tissue robotic surgery market. The initial authorization covers several upper abdominal general surgical procedures, with additional indications expected to follow.
What makes OTTAVA particularly interesting is its unique architecture. Unlike conventional robotic platforms, whose arms are mounted on a patient-side cart or separate bedside units, OTTAVA is the first soft-tissue surgical robot with its robotic arms integrated directly into the operating table. This table-mounted design significantly reduces the system’s footprint, potentially improving operating room workflow and making robotic surgery accessible in ORs with limited space.
After years of development, OTTAVA is finally moving from concept to clinical reality. Whether its innovative design will translate into widespread adoption remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the robotic surgery landscape has just become even more competitive.
