Rey Juan Carlos University Hospital opened on March 21, 2012 equipped with a refurbished, second-generation da Vinci S HD. The first robotic surgery was performed by the Department of Urology in December 13, 2012, and the first TransOral Robotic Surgery (TORS) in July 15, 2013. In 2017, the hospital upgraded to the fourth-generation da Vinci Xi system.
It is noteworthy that this was not the first surgical robot in the country. The first one was installed at the Puigvert Foundation in Barcelona in 2005, and the first in Madrid arrived at San Carlos Clinic Hospital in 2006.
However, the Robotic Surgery Program at Rey Juan Carlos University Hospital has been exemplary in many aspects: coordination, protocolization, multispecialty integration, case-load management, and particularly, efficiency. This success has been documented in the Journal of Robotic Surgery (2023). The program’s volume has steadily increased, reaching 452 robotic surgical procedures in 2023.
The robotic surgery schedule is now saturated, with only a slight margin for improvement. Consequently, the Robotic Surgery Committee has been demanding a second robot for several years.
And now…
The second robot has already arrived to the hospital!!!
We did no expect it to be R2D2…

But look at it in action (and do not miss the lady in the green jacket).
🙂
We will keep striving to provide the best surgery for our patients.
