The Toumai® Surgical Robot, developed by the Chinese company MicroPort MedBot, represents one of the most advanced robotic surgery platforms emerging from China. Development of the system began in the late 2010s as part of MicroPort’s strategy to build a comprehensive portfolio of surgical robots. A major milestone occurred in January 2022, when the Toumai laparoscopic surgical robot received approval from China’s National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) for clinical use, becoming one of the country’s first domestically developed multi-port robotic systems for soft-tissue surgery.
Shortly after regulatory approval, the system demonstrated its capabilities in March 2022, when surgeons used Toumai to perform a robot-assisted radical prostatectomy remotely over a 5G network, operating between Shanghai and Hainan, a distance of nearly 5,000 km—one of the longest telesurgical procedures reported at the time. In the following years, Toumai expanded its clinical adoption within China across urology, general surgery, and gynecology, and in 2023 the system obtained CE marking in Europe, allowing its introduction into selected European centers and marking an important step in MicroPort MedBot’s international expansion in robotic surgery.
