SpeedPAL is a robotic camera assistant developed by Fullbright Medical, a Shanghai based company.

The system is designed to hold and manipulate an endoscope during minimally invasive surgery, allowing the surgeon to control the camera without relying continuously on a human camera holder.

SpeedPAL combines a motorized robotic arm with surgeon-controlled interfaces, including voice commands and manual controls, to position the endoscope according to the surgeon’s instructions.

The system features a 6-degree-of-freedom robotic camera arm and is compatible with 10 mm endoscopes. The six degrees of freedom allow the camera to be positioned and oriented in three-dimensional space, providing the range of movement required for dynamic endoscopic visualization.

SpeedPAL offers three control modes:

  • Voice commands, allowing the surgeon to request camera movements directly.
  • Robotic arm joystick, providing manual control of camera positioning.
  • Grasper joystick, offering an additional surgeon-controlled interface.

Its purpose is straightforward: to provide stable, responsive camera control while reducing dependence on a dedicated camera assistant.

The concept is not new — but SpeedPAL represents a modern attempt to bring the robotic endoscope holder into contemporary surgical practice.

J Granell
Robotic Surgeon

Prior to commencing my venture into robotic surgery, I had established a firm grounding as an oncologic surgeon. My experience encompassed a wide range of resection and reconstructive procedures, as well as proficiency in minimally invasive surgical techniques and endoscopic surgery. These acquired skills and expertise serve as fundamental pillars for achieving success in robotic surgery.
