The KangDuo Surgical Robot (KD-SR-1000) was a new robotic surgical platform built by Suzhou Kangduo Robot Co.,Ltd. The first step in the application in Head&Neck Surgery, a preclinical trial in porcine models, wad published in July 2024.
The company behind, Harbin Sagebot Intelligent Medical Equipment Co., LTD., a high-tech enterprise focusing on the research and development, production and sales of surgical robots, was founded in 2013, and is located in Dalian (north-east China).
The first KangDuo system (SR-1000) received market approval from the Chinese regulator (NMPA) in June 2022, allowing commercial clinical use.
It has additional devices under research:
- Spinal Endoscopic Surgical Robot
- Flexible surgical robot via urethra
- Surgical Robot Via Oral Cavity
- Cochlear Implant System Surgical Robot
The first references on the KD-SR in PubMed appeared in years 2021-2022. Those were urologic procedures: radical prostatectomy, pieloplasty and partial nephrectomy. All of the first clinical series were performed in Beijing.
The first paper on H&N robotic surgery in the International Journal of Oral Science reports the use of an animal model to perform parotidectomy, submandibular gland resection and neck dissection. A video demonstration of the procedures is downloadable. The procedures were performed with a Maryland dissector and a harmonic device.

The KD-SR is an obvious copy of the da Vinci Xi. The patient cart has three arms instead of four, but with the same design almost in every detail, including the platform and the joints. The arms are numbered “1” and “2”, and the third in the middle “C”. The console features a 3D monitor instead of a visor, and a secondary monitor on-top of the former to display additional information.
How good is the performance of the device? Or a better question, is it good enough? Whatever the answer, it is clear that that we are moving forward at an accelerated pace.
The Surgical Robot Via Oral Cavity is again a copy of the da Vinci SP (Single Port). Notably, two of the five devices are specific for Otolaryngologist – Head and Neck Surgeons, and a third (KD-SR) is similar to the device currently used for Robotic Surgery in the Head and Neck. So maybe, finally, after years of neglect, we are on focus.
Newer versions have followed: SR-1500 received NMPA approval in April 2024, and SR-2000 in July 2024, expanding indications and system capabilities.
These approvals allow the system to be used clinically in urology, gynecology, general surgery, and thoracic surgery within China. However, unlike some other robotic platforms, KangDuo currently does not have FDA clearance or CE marking, so its commercialization is mainly limited to the Chinese market for now.
